Burra and South Havra

Several trips are possible in the sheltered waters around the Bridge-End Outdoor Centre, between the mainland and the islands of Trondra and East and West Burra, and if conditions are right, extending as far as the uninhabited island of South Havra, "Shetland's St. Kilda", evacuated 80 years ago, with its prominent ruined windmill.

Paddling around Burra

Approaching South Havra, with the windmill visible on the skyline

Landing at West Ham, South Havra

We can visit the deserted croft of Symbister and its Arctic Tern colony, the stacks and arches of Houssness at the south end of the East Isle, and the beautiful white sand beach of Minn on the West Isle, where the sea has almost turned the headland of Ketlaness into another island.
