Ronas Voe and Lang Ayre

Ronas Voe is long deep fjord on the north west of the mainland, sheltered from most wind directions, but open to northwesterly swells.

Tunnels at Turls Head

Turls Head at the north end of the Lang Ayre

We launch from a small red sand beach, avoiding the Arctic Tern colony, and explore some magnificent sandstone cliffs and stacks along the south shore. The cliffs here rise to 100 metres and are riddled with caves, arches and hidden passages. There are many small beaches tucked away at the head of narrow inlets or geos. Further on we come to a couple of larger red beaches, popular with grey seals, which will take to the wter as we approach and swim watchfully around us. We take a break on one of these beaches.

If conditions are right and time allows we will cross the voe to see the magnificent sea stacks known as the Roodrans and the long almost inaccessible beach of the Lang Ayre. On the way we should see other seabirds including puffins, guillemots and fulmars.
